The True Story of How We Met
Much like Peter & Company, the events of Peter & Whitney are semi-autobiographical. This means that they are inspired by true events but not necessarily 100% accurate. The story of how Whitney and I met in real life is somewhat different than how it unfolds throughout the events of both comics.
In the comic, Peter and Whitney are around the same age when they meet for the first time in middle school. In P&C, they are shown as good friends, while in P&W they are shown to reconnect in college and finally begin their relationship together.
In real life, Whitney and I are actually 8 years apart in age. Back in the Summer of 2007, I had just finished my time in undergrad at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), when I was randomly messaged on Yahoo by an individual who had questions about the school. She introduced herself -- a young artist named Whitney who was getting ready to start her freshman year at SCAD -- and we immediately hit it off. That winter I returned to the school in order to pursue my Master's studies, and it was then that we finally met in person for the first time.
Three years later, we were married.
Whitney's place in the Peter & Company universe was established very early in our time together, but that comic was still centered around my own childhood stories, and we always had a desire to make a comic that told OUR story; we wouldn't be able to show Peter and Whitney in a serious relationship within the time frame of the original comic. So we began brainstorming ideas, and after a couple years' worth of development and planning, we decided to create a sequel series to the original.
As such, Peter & Whitney is a blend of stories from our time together at SCAD, mixed with stories of my own time going through undergrad. Unlike other romantic comics that build up to the relationship, there is no debate here as to whether the two title characters will end up together; rather it will happen quickly, and the comic instead will showcase how their relationship grows and becomes stronger over time.
This is a true story of two best friends falling in love. We hope you enjoy it!
